The promise of fruit - citrus fruits in art and culture

19th May-11 September 2011
Lemons, oranges, and bitter oranges - the fabled golden apples are now part of our everyday lives. Since ancient times they entwine themselves around  many promises, myths and dreams. They are symbols of eternal life, and symbols for purity, for fertility, for virtue and for the scent of the wide world.
The Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg brings together extraordinary works of art from the great European museums .Paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto Dix, Francisco Zurbarán, installations by Joseph Beuys, sculptures and arts and crafts are evidence of the promises of citrus fruit in religion, mythology, art and everyday life from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Among the highlights of the exhibition is Joseph Beuys' 'Capri Battery', 1985  Munich, Galerie Bernd Klüser
