Imagine the world without honeybees. It’s not just about honey: as a recent UN report has reminded us, of the 100 crop species that provide 90% of the world’s food, over 70 are pollinated by bees.
But bees are in danger everywhere. Why? No doubt it has something to do with the use of insecticides and loss of habitat and biodiversity. Or misguided beekeeping techniques, including the abuse of the bee by industrialised farming.
But perhaps there is a more fundamental cause, of which these misguided practices are but the outward expression: our lack of reverence towards these miraculous creatures. Healthy bee colonies are colonies treated with understanding, love and respect by those that keep them. Learning this understanding, love and respect is not hard. And not only can it help to heal the bees, it may change your life too!
To find out how, join us in July for this course addressing the principles and practices of natural beekeeping offered by the Natural Beekeeping Trust in association with the Life Science Trust.
Participants will learn about the essential aspects of colony life through the year and of natural and biodynamic bee husbandry. The course will include observation exercises. It is suitable for anyone with an interest in bees and nature, but does not require prior beekeeping experience.
The course will be led by Johannes Wirz from the Natural Science Section at the Goetheanum in Switzerland and Heidi Herrmann of the Natural Beekeeping Trust.
The course fee of £225 comprises tuition, Saturday lunch, refreshments and all materials. Concessions available (e.g. 20% off for Friends of the NBKT). We can also offer limited accommodation for an additional fee. Camping is also an option.
