The Goethe House in Frankfurt is located in the “Old Town” and is the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a worldwide known German writer and pictorial artist.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a prominent figure in the intellectual society of the late-18th to early 19th-century. Though his interests ranged from philosophy to playwriting, he rose to fame with the publication of the poetic drama “Faust”. Goethe was born in 1749, but surprisingly, the house in which he was born and raised is still standing today.
Goethe House – 3 Floors of History
Located in Frankfurt, Germany, Goethe House is a tall, four-story building that gives much insight into the life of the Goethe family. A spacious hall marks the entrance to the old house, and the two rooms on the ground floor feature furniture and artwork that was popular at the time. The kitchen is also located on the ground floor, and hints of a very interesting past with its 18th-century stove and cooking utensils adorning the walls.
Music in the Goethe House
The first floor’s music room holds a rare pyramid piano and shows the family’s passion for music. A library and picture gallery is included on the second floor, featuring over 2,000 literary works and several walls covered in symmetrically-placed paintings. The anteroom of the third floor contains a clothes press, which was a forerunner of the modern iron.
Goethe House also displays a puppet theatre, given to Goethe when he was four years old, which became famous through mention in one of his works. Without the writing room, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe‘s life may have taken a different turn. Located on the third floor, this room contains glimpses of its former inhabitant. The desk at which Goethe wrote many of his works stands in the corner of the room, next to a window that would have given him a perfect view of the outdoors.
Many of his own drawings line the walls of the Goethe House, and the silhouettes that were so popular at the time hang above the desk. With its entire memorabilia, Goethe House a true historical treasure that will delight and inform all who venture through it.
