max-faust-und-gretchenJane Brown, Department of Germanics, University of Washington, discusses Max's Faust illustrations in the context of Goethe's play and in the ways late-nineteenth-century understanding of it was shaped by Gounod's opera. By comparing Max's images with Goethe's own illustrations and his visual sources, with Romantic illustrations such as those of Eugène Delacroix, and with modern film versions of the Faust material, the lecture explores how Max created a modern interpretation of this literary figure. Presented with University of Washington’s Department of Germanics and the Simpson Center for the Humanities.
