Joseph Beuys 'The Multiples' at the Art Museum Bonn
The Kunstmuseum Bonn was built by the Berlin based architect Axel Schultes and is one of the most important new museums buildings in Germany post 1945. The focus of the museum is on the Macke collection, the Rheinland expressionists and German art – mainly painting - after 1945. The spectrum of multiples by Joseph Beuys is extraordinary. The presentation principle of special artist’s rooms is unique within the German museums landscape. Important changing exhibitions and an attractive fringe programme are also presented.

Durch die Beuys-Stiftung Ulbricht, die Mitte der achtziger Jahre in die Sammlungen des Kunstmuseums integriert werden konnte, verfügt das Haus über einen reichen Fundus an Multiples von Joseph Beuys. Ergänzt durch Ankäufe aus späteren Jahren beläuft sich der Bestand heute auf gut 450 Objekte, Postkarten, Druckgraphiken, Plakate, Videos, Schallplatten etc., die im Zeitraum zwischen 1965 und 1986, dem Todesjahr von Joseph Beuys, entstanden sind.
Medial also äußerst vielfältig angelegt, spiegeln die Multiples in komplexer Weise das Gesamtwerk, mit dem sie inhaltlich und formal eng verbunden sind. Mal beziehen sie sich auf frühe Zeichnungen oder spektakuläre Aktionen des Künstlers, mal verleihen sie aber auch seinem Denken eine spezifisch bildnerische Form – wie etwa in der Capri – Batterie. Im Ganzen betrachtet stecken sie auf diese Weise das Panorama seines Schaffens ab und bestätigen damit seine Aussage Wenn ihr alle meine Multiples habt, dann habt ihr mich ganz. Auch wenn dies ganz ohne Zweifel zutrifft, dann geht die Bedeutung der Multiples doch noch hierüber hinaus. Als preiswerte Auflagenobjekte dienten sie nämlich dazu, sein Denken und Handeln in die Gesellschaft zu tragen und dort wirksam werden zu lassen. So muss man die Multiples als homöopathische Dosen verstehen, die der Umgestaltung und Gesundung des, nach Beuys’ Ansicht, erkrankten gesellschaftlichen Körpers dienen sollten.

Through the offices of the Beuys-Stiftung Ulbricht, which the Museum was able to integrate into its collection in the mid-eighties, the Museum now has a rich fund of Multiples by Joseph Beuys. Supplemented by purchases from later years the stock consists today of a good 450 objects, postcards, prints, posters, videos, records, etc., from the period between 1965 and 1986, the death of Joseph Beuys.
Put together from so many different media, the Multiples reflect the whole of Beuys’ works with which they are all related in content and form. Sometimes they refer to early drawings or Actions of the artist, but sometimes they give specific sculptural form to his thoughts – as in the Capri battery. Viewed as a whole they show the panorama of his work and in this way confirm his statement ‘If you have all my multiples you will have all of me’. Even if this is completely true, the meaning of the Multiples goes even deeper. As valuable display objects they served the purpose of taking his thinking and methods into society, allowing them to take effect there. In this way one has to understand the Multiples as homeopathic doses which are to bring about the transformation of a social body which in Beuys’ view is sick.
