The Entwined History of Light and Mind

From July 10th – 14th, SEE! COLOUR! invites you to a conference with the American Professor of Physics Arthur Zajonc. The focal point of the conference will be Arthur Zajonc’s book 'Catching the Light, The Entwined History of Light and Mind'.

Catching the Light

From ancient times to the present, from philosophers to quantum physicists, nothing has so perplexed, so fascinated, so captivated the mind as the elusive definition of light. In Catching the Light, Arthur Zajonc takes us on an epic journey into history, tracing how humans have endeavored to understand the phenomenon of light. Blending mythology, religion, science, literature, and painting, Zajonc reveals in poetic detail the human struggle to identify the vital connection between the outer light of nature and the inner light of the human spirit.

With its focus on light and colour, the exhibition SEE! COLOUR! provides a sensational context for the conference to research light in all its aspects. As James Turrell’s installations are all centered around our perception of light and of seeing itself, we are excited to bring “The Light Inside” (Title of the Turrell exhibition within SEE! COLOUR!) and Arthur Zajonc’s “Catching the Light” together.

Arthur Zajonc is a professor of physics at Amherst College. He has conducted research in atomic and laser physics, quantum optics, and the experimental foundations of quantum mechanics at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the Universities of Rochester, Innsbruck, and Hanover. He lectures widely on the history and philosophy of science and the relationships of science to contemporary life. He is the President of the Lindisfarne Association, a Founding Fellow of the Fetzer Institute, and a core founding member of the Kira Institute.

Reduced price for students/pensioners: 1250 SEK
The conference participation fee is to be paid directly onsite at the reception of the Kulturhuset in Ytterjärna.
Conference guests get free entrance to SEE! COLOUR! during the conference period (10th – 14th July).

The new Hotel Kulturhuset (situated directly on the exhibition campus) has 34 individually colour coordinated rooms.
Prices
Single room: 1100 SEK per night (incl. breakfast)
Double room: 900 SEK per night (incl. breakfast)
More simple accommodation
There is the possibility to stay in a simpler accommodation with shared bathrooms.
Single room:  350 SEK per night
Double room:  550 SEK per night / two persons
(Sheets and towels can be rented for 80 SEK)
Payment for all accommodation will take place on site.
Food prices
Breakfast buffet (in Kulturhuset): 150 SEK (included if you stay at the hotel)
Lunch buffet (at Ytterjärna Restaurant): 130 SEK
Simple dinner (at Ytterjärna Restaurant): 100 SEK
