A talk by Doug Allanson on the philosophical basis for Steiner's work in exploring the spiritual world; a response to Descartian dualism, at the Kingston Philosophy Café.
Kingston Philosophy Café is a series of events, not a place. It currently meets twice a month: on Thursday evenings at Bridges café, Kingston riverside, with discussions beginning at 6.00pm and ending at around 7.25; and on Wednesday evenings at the Ram Jam Club, Grey Horse pub, Richmond Road, starting at 7.00pm and ending at 9.00. But see below and our Events Calendar for extra events and variations.
Our aim is to discuss a range of fascinating and challenging philosophical topics seriously and rigorously in a convivial setting – an opportunity for meaningful conversation about new ideas with new people. Kingston Philosophy Café is open to all – anyone interested in philosophy is welcome and no prior knowledge or expertise is needed, though experts, philosophy teachers and students are very welcome. Most of our meetings are free and quite informal, but we do also hold occasional, more formal, ticketed events. Come along a bit early to meet up and buy a drink at the bar before discussions begin - and continue the conversation afterwards at a nearby pub or bar.
Topics likely to come up in 2011 include: philosophers Marx, Hume, Descartes...; ethics; the purpose of life; death and suicide; the Good Life; conservation; rock music; the purpose of philosophy, happiness/wellbeing... See below for discussions coming up imminently, and go to our Events Calendar for more details and future meeting dates, times and topics, which may vary.
KPC is a collaboration between Marilyn Mason, Filiz Peach, Barrie Selwyn, Principal of Kingston Adult Education (which offers Philosophy courses for those who wish to take it further - see below), Bridges café, the Grey Horse, Kingston, and everyone who comes along.
