"Beuys in Perugia"
The Palazzo della Penna is situated in Perugia, Italy. Located between Independence Avenue and the Three Strings, the palace houses important and prestigious Italian art collections.
It is situated on a former Roman amphitheatre and has an internal decoration with frescoes of the neoclassical style. Until the late nineteenth century, the building was preserved a rich collection of works of art belonging to the Baron Fabrizio Penna. Nowadays, the palace is home to temporary exhibitions and two permanent exhibitions, a local artist Gerardo Dottori and the German Joseph Beuys (see below*).
Restored several times, now two rooms of the palace are for permanent exhibition of the painter Perugino Gerardo Dottori (1884-1977) and the German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-86), professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.
The palace, with its largeness and the circular tower, became one of the most significant monuments in Perugia. Inside, it is widely decorated with neoclassic frescoes and the basement has different historic stratifications. This palace hosted one of the most important art galleries of Perugia until 1874, but this collection was unfortunately sold by Fabrizio Ricci della Penna because of some judicial problems. Today the Palazzo della Penna is the site of Cultural Activity of Perugia. Throughout the year, it hosts temporary exhibitions of famous contemporary artists of various nationalities.
*On the Second Floor below Ground Level
This space is devoted to six diagrams on blackboards that the German
artist Joseph Beuys (1921-86) executed during a colloquium with Alberto
Burri that was held in 1980 in Rocca Paolina. Beuys used these sketches
to illustrate his approach to the theory of art.
