Today there are many different currencies belonging to different geographic areas. Dig deeper, however, and the question arises: what is the essence of this differentiation? Travelling the world paying by card, does one even notice that there are distinct currencies (rather than simply different prices)? In a single global economy, can money be more than one thing? Rather than centralised banking, can we not realise this more effectively through adopting a universal approach to accounting?

* Arthur Edwards has a masters in economics from Buckingham University.
